Good Afternoon, I have some usefil website info at the end of this lengthy mail. I envy you your challenges.

It was fun meeting you this morning. I enjoy people living an adventure. I called Bob Newbill and gave him a heads up on you all. He is very familiar with the area between Belfair and Montesano (his son lives in Montesano) so he can provide route and other info. He may have other contacts as well. It is possible to ferry to Seattle (free) and then ferry to Bremerton (about $12 dollars each I think). That would give you a fairly easy day into Belfair or possibly Shelton. I went onto mapmyride.com and ran from the ferry dock to downtown Shelton via the old Belfair highway. [Follow Kisap Way west, then left onto Auto Center Way as you pass under the Freeway]. then over the hill past pendergrast Park following your instincts and the main flow of traffic. You will not get lost as all downhill roads end up in the same place. It is a total of 40 miles via highway 3 or about 43 miles via the more scenic and less traveled hwy 106. Remember to take the Old Belfair hwy out of Gorst (Kitsap Muffler is your landmark) then just stay on the road until you literally drop into Belfair [It is all downhill after the railroad overass]At the QFC, Belfair state park is to your right, along the North side of the canal, about 5 miles and traffic eases off pretty rapidly. Going to Shelton? As you leave Belfair going south the road going left (up the hill) is Hwy 3, a nice but busy road, or you can take 106 which runs along the south side of smoothly paved, low traffic Hoods Canal until you reach the Purdy Cutoff Rd. From the PCO, you can take the left onto Enchantment, Left at Hatchery, Right at Webb which becomes McReavy which becomes Brockdale and takes you into Shelton.

If you miss the turn off from the Purdy cutoff or for that matter miss the Purdy Cutoff, 106 will put you onto Hwy 101 so you cannot get lost. And you have already been on that anyway. No sweat.

Mapmyride shows a max elevation of 463 feet with 1400 ascent and 1150 descent. I would strongly endorse playing in that website. It is FREE and goes anywhere in the world. I like Google but prefer Mapmyride for routing purposes as Google always assumes you are driving and does not provide alternatives, elevation and other bicycle information.

You know CGOAB, the first is a ride that my friend Fred and I took across the southern US and the second one that the couple I told you about put out. Lots of contact information on that one and you have a lot in common.

The last is a national bike blog about all things bicycle. You might get on to the touring and also the regional forums. That might prove to be very beneficial for contacts and places to stay as you pilgrimage the trail to any place.

I am sending you some fan-mail. Here it is. The podcasts are Great.

Brian and Dorothy on a 36′ Brentboat named ‘Tagish’ are approaching La Paz from Cabo as I type. When you get to saltwater on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja , start calling on your vhf radio for them. Oh , no radio on your bike ?
    They are at: brian33greenboat@yahoo.ca

Wifi on their boat is surprisingly available. The boat is a lighter green than ours.
I think they will be heading north to the islands and bays – places such as Santispac near Mulege or Bahia San Juanico , possibly Santa Rosalia or Loreto. I will let them know you two are wheeling through the desert.
It is also possible they might be weeks in La Paz .

    Hola Alex y Meredith,

Buen viaje y mucha suerte.

    Abrazo,

    Jorge

No new blogs, posts, podcasts lately. I’m going through withdrawal! Guess I’ll just have to get the live goods next month.
Hope the weather is warm, the cycling smooth and the inner tubes intact!!

Hi, I just read your post about wanting to crew through the Panama Canal…
I am in the process of buying a 36′ Columbia located in Texas and am going to sail her south and through the Panama Canal then up to Victoria BC. I have sailed from Vancouver Island to Mexico and back in 2002-2003 and am very experienced sailor. I am looking for crew to help all or some of the way, however I don’t think I will be in Panama until end of April, beginning of May. This is NOT an offer for paid positions, rather, you pay your own way, food & drink and a portion of fuel if we choose to motor, although I prefer to sail, I cover all other boat expenses.
a little about me, I am 53 year old male, married (but wife is unable to make this trip). Have sailed since I was 16 and love the ocean. I spent 20+ years working around the world in the oil fields and then returned to University and got a degree in Child & Youth Care – First Nations and worked with high at risk teens. Currently I am unemployed and am bring the S/V back to Victoria for my wife and I to sail for a few years and then circumnavigate when my wife finishes her job. I am a non-drinker, but have no problem with others drinking. My plan is not to spend alot of time stopping and exploring, but a few stops along the trip are a must.
Let me know if you are interested in this trip or any part of it.
    Cheers…Rob
